Green Ways to Stay Cool

When the summer sun makes you feel like all you want to do is stay indoors with the A/C on high, energy bills can quickly increase. Here are some ideas to help you keep your cool and use less energy:
• Lush Landscaping - Lots of unshaded rock, cement, or asphalt on the south and west sides of your home can increase the temperature indoors and radiate heat even after the sun has set. Plant trees or shrubs to provide shade.
• In the Kitchen - Don't even think about turning on that oven! Prepare meals by using the microwave, grill or stovetop. Spicy dishes that contain capsaicin, a chemical found in things like hot peppers, can make you sweat without actually raising your body temperature. Once your skin is damp, you'll feel cooled by its evaporation. After meals, air-dry dishes instead of using your dishwasher's drying cycle.
• Cool Clothes - Choosing loose-fitting clothing made from lightweight cotton or linen allows your skin to "breathe". Other fabrics like madras and seersucker can also help you feel cooler. And opt for whites and pastel instead of dark shades that actually attract heat.
• Ice, Ice Baby - It's important to be hydrated by drinking plenty of water, so keep a reusable water bottle filled with ice and water. Touch the bottle to your skin for a cooling rush. This is especially effective on pulse points, such as your neck, wrists and the back of your knees.
